The Waswo X. Waswo Collection of Indian Printmaking represents over seventy-nine Indian artists from diverse geographical regions. Consisting of woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and screenprints, the works in the collection span a time from 1916 to the present. Unlike many surveys of contemporary printmaking, Between the Lines approaches its subject matter with an emphasis on imagery and meaning rather than technique. It stands as a completely fresh approach to a much neglected subject. Art Historian and Curator Lina Vincent Sunish makes a unique analysis of the sociological and historical context that has moulded the growth of Indian art. Arguing that images often straddle the lines of arbitrary categories, she approaches The Waswo X. Waswo Collection of Indian Printmaking as a particular pathway through a complex aesthetic and historical geography. With keen insight she elaborates on how the concepts of Identity, Place and Power have shaped artistic creation, while at the same time encouraging us to think between these categorical parameters.

For the past year independent curator and arts writer Sarah Tanguy has worked with Sol Print Studio (SPS) to prepare an exhibition for artists. Sarah visited SPS last week to curate an upcoming exhibition at Hillyer Art Space in Washington, D.C. Fourteen artists have been selected to participate.

"Under the Sun: Artists of Sol Print Studio" represents the continued growth of SPS and emphasizes the deep affinity artists, who often work in diverse mediums, have for printing processes. The artists involved with SPS come from South America, Texas, Philadelphia, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Some come from a printmaking background, while others work in jewelry, video and sound, sculpture, painting, and performance. The unique aspect of SPS is that artists develop specific projects and are guided from conception to edition through comprehensive printmaking techniques.

Washington-based Sarah Tanguy is an independent curator and arts writer, as well as a curator at Art in Embassies, U.S. Department of State. In addition to exhibitions and collections for U.S. diplomatic missions overseas, her current projects include “Between the Covers: Altered Books in Contemporary Art” and an ongoing exhibition series for the American Center for Physics.

SOL PRINT STUDIOS

We offer artists project-based, guided studio time in our print shop. Artist and printmakers Soledad Salamé and Randi Reiss-McCormick work individually with artists to create a strong body of work, offering enough guidance and freedom to enhance their creative identity and visual language. Our residencies are an opportunity for growth within your artistic practice; many of our artists have acquired new venues for exhibition with the portfolios they create in our classes.

These residencies are an immersive experience where all energies work to help the artist best develop their ideas in well-executed prints. The duration of the program is four days of intensive work and collaboration.

Cost: $250 per day - Includes all studio materials (except for paper and solar plates), and the help of a studio assistant.

Washington Print Club Open Studio at SPS Saturday, November 15th,

Our Open Studio for the Washinton Print Club will take place this Saturday, November 15, from 11am to 4 pm.

From the WPC invitation:

Please join Soledad Salamé, Founder and Director of Sol Print Studios, in her beautiful Baltimore row house and studio for a special WPC program focusing on the art of printmaking. Soledad, an award-winning printmaker, and eleven SPS artists from the region and beyond will be present to show and explain their prints. The work will be on view for closer inspection and for sale.

With the help of Assistant Director Randi Reiss-McCormack and Shop Assistant Jessica Childress, Sol Print Studios is a collaborative print workshop for which Soledad has designed residencies for artists ranging from discovering the medium to mixed-media projections and editions. Soledad serves as a mentor and resource, carefully nurturing and "sometimes pushing" artists in their own direction to develop personal style and visual language.

WPC President Chris With and Beverly With, along with WPC members Bob Stana and Tom Judy, visited Soledad in her studio and were deeply impressed with her work and highly recommend that WPC members take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Soledad and SPS artists have kindly offered to host a buffet brunch for WPC members.

The Davidoff Art Initiative in collaboration with Altos de Chavón School of Design is pleased to announce the first five international artists who will participate in the Davidoff International Art Residency at the newly built residency facilities at Altos de Chavón School of Design in La Romana, Dominican Republic, from January 18 to April 5, 2015.

This is a major and defining step for the Davidoff Art Initiative, which has already supported Dominican and Caribbean artists since 2013 by providing opportunities for them to take part in renowned residency programs in New York City, Berlin and Beijing. Now, rounding out the global initiative into a fully two-way cultural exchange, Davidoff is launching its first residency for international artists visiting the Dominican Republic.

Nominated by a global network of art professionals and selected by the Davidoff International Advisory Council, the five artists in the inaugural group represent a diverse range of artistic practices and backgrounds. They are deeply interested in engaging with the social and cultural fabric of the Dominican Republic.

The five artists are: Alia Farid (b. 1985, Kuwait/Puerto Rico), Nuria Montiel (b. 1982, Mexico City, Mexico), Cathleen Mooses (b. 1982, Chicago, IL), Mathilde Rosier (b. 1973, Paris, France), and Soledad Salamé (b. 1954, Santiago, Chile). In addition to pursuing their own work during the residency, the artists will have many opportunities to engage with the Dominican cultural community, as well as with students and residents of Altos de Chavón and the surrounding region.

The Davidoff International Art Residency hosts emerging and mid-career artists for a period of ten weeks. They will work in new, custom-built artist studios designed by Adolfo Despradel, Director of Planning and Design, Costasur Dominicana S.A. at Altos de Chavón School of Design, the country's leading institution for art and design education. A graduate of Altos de Chavón, Adolfo Despradel has previously worked in the architectural firm of David Chipperfield in London.

The nominators for the 2015 Davidoff International Art Residency Program were: Aaron Cézar, founding director of Delfina Foundation in London; Amanda Coulson, co-founder/executive director of VOLTA and director of the National Gallery of the Bahamas; Charles Desmarais, president of the San Francisco Art Institute; Mareike Dittmer, co-publisher of Frieze d/e Magazine and publishing consultant of Frieze Magazine; Pablo Helguera, director of adult and academic programs in the Department of Education at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Irene Hofmann, the Phillips Director and Chief Curator of SITE Santa Fe; and Philip Tinari, director of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing.

From paper formation to the computer, artists are now blending various techniques for acquiring form, layering and color. This workshop is seen as shared exploration between the participants to mine ideas for hand papermaking as an art form. Sheet forming with aspects of translucency, pulp painting, watermarking and the use of inclusions in the paper will be explored.(instructor will bring various examples and give a PowerPoint talk). Students should come prepared for exploring wet paper pulp and resources from their sketchbook and personal experience to create their works. Bring some preliminary found materials like collage elements, found textures, memorials and the like. Also bring personal concepts that you would like to develop or discuss as trouble shooting during the workshop.
